Led Show 2 - prototyping

Ok finally, after hours and hours of hard work, after having damaged my eyes looking at the LED for long time… i’m very proud to say that we have the first prototype of our next generation of LED systems for live performaceinstallationdesign, two years after “Led Show 1” now we have
“Led Show 2“!

Prototype #1 - 02/01/2009

The prototype is composed by 8 Shiftbrite RGB LED drived by an Arduino 10000, a custom software run on arduino and is able to receive command from another custom software run on PC transmitting the frames to show on Shiftbrite.

I’ll write on details about prototype later on, now enjoy the first video i made today… i know is very long but i like it too much to cut it

Prototype #2� - 03/09/2009

The second prototype is ready!

It is a 6×4 pixels matrix, each RGB LED is indipendent form others and is able of milions of colors. The phisical dimension of the matrix is about 25×30 cm.

This week we’ll finalize the prototiping phase and, if customers like the concept, we’ll start with the final project, an 8×2 meters 1500 pixels flexible led wall!

How did you do the fading in LabView? PWM and sweep the duty cycle?

Hi, actually form LabVIEW i can control the chain of LEDs passing to arduino an array of R,G,B values.
The fading here is obtained playing whit its, i use a function able compose color in HSL mode than when my algo decide to turn on a led i set a value of L at 200 then my sw decrease this value at certain rate at of a variable value i can.
The color obtainet is transformed in RGB format and than trasfered to arduino.

Are you continuing to use the shiftbrite for the full project, or do you expect to use another controller such as the TLC5947?

Hi, no i plan to build a custom version of RGB led, in this case using again the Allegro A6281 so the same of Shiftbrite.
This is because we want to have 1.5W pixel and a 10 cm pixel pitch.

Hi Alessandro.
Your project is1500 pixels flexible led wall. But A6281 support 250 pixel. How do they do it.?

Hi yes you are right, we’ll use 1 arduino to drive a group of 196 A6281 that we’ll use to build a 1 square meter (essentially a matrix 14×14 pixel) so the final project that will have 8 square meter surface will use 8 Arduino syncronized together via a custim serial protocol i’m writing

Queste cose le faccio sia per passione sia per lavoro, non siamo una societ� “classica” siamo pi� simili a un “collettivo” persone con esperienze varie che si trovano a lavorare su progetti mettendo a disposizione le proprie esperienze a seconda del progetto stesso, io ad esempio per il Led Wall mi sto occupando principalmente di scrivere il sw sia per Arduino sia il sequencer su PC

@John: i for sure can share the code with you but considere that basically the Arduino code is a parser of a custom protocol generated by LabVIEW sw i don’t think this can be flexible enought to be used in oder project.
Anyway i have anotehr project in mind related to this topic, a LabVIEW library for Firmata, this for shure could be very useful but i need to find time to implement it…

@sinan ozturk: yes the wall will be controlled by a PC. I’m not finished the project we are waiting for the final costumer “GO” to start the production of our custom rgb led modules
