For a work we made recently we need to develop a very special software.

That software have to enable the end user to:

• build graphicaly its own user interface
• link objects on the user interface with a database
• define some calculation and logic on the data and on the user interface objects

After 4 weeks of hard work the first alpha release of the tool is ready.

We made the tool using LabVIEW (with an exensive use of scripting VIs) and LUA as a “glue”

If you still never heard this news : Radiohead released a� video for its song “House of Cards” from the album “In Rainbows”.

No cameras or lights were used. Instead two technologies were used to capture 3D images: Geometric Informatics and Velodyne LIDAR.

Radiohead decide to release ad “open source” part of the data captured from the laser and used for making the video, so anyone can use it to make a brand new custom video.

So i decide to put my hand on the data and make my own video using pure LabVIEW software… hope you like it!

If you manage to create a data visualization that you’d wish to share, the band would love to see it. You can share your videos on the House of Cards YouTube group.

Ok finally, after hours and hours of hard work, after having damaged my eyes looking at the LED for long time… i’m very proud to say that we have the first prototype of our next generation of LED systems for live performaceinstallationdesign, two years after “Led Show 1” now we have
“Led Show 2“!

Prototype #1 - 02/01/2009

The prototype is composed by 8 Shiftbrite RGB LED drived by an Arduino 10000, a custom software run on arduino and is able to receive command from another custom software run on PC transmitting the frames to show on Shiftbrite.

I’ll write on details about prototype later on, now enjoy the first video i made today… i know is very long but i like it too much to cut it

Prototype #2  - 03/09/2009

The second prototype is ready!

It is a 6×4 pixels matrix, each RGB LED is indipendent form others and is able of milions of colors. The phisical dimension of the matrix is about 25×30 cm.

This week we’ll finalize the prototiping phase and, if customers like the concept, we’ll start with the final project, an 8×2 meters 1500 pixels flexible led wall!

Per sviluppare la nostra prima applicazione Android abbiamo bisogno di 3 componenti tutti disponibili indifferentemente per Windows, Linux e MacOS

1. Android SDK (Software Development Kit) scaricabile all’indirizzo http://code.google.com/android/download.html. L’SDK ci mette a disposizione le librerie Android, alcuni esempi, la documentazion, dei tool per scrivere e debuggare le applicazioni rispettivamente un  emulatore molto molto bello e il DDMS (Dalvik Debug Monitor Service)
2. JDK 5 o 6 (Java Development Kit)  scaricabile all’indirizzo http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp.
3. Eclipse IDE 3.3 o 3.4. (Integrated Development Enviroment). Questo componente non è “obbligatorio” ma con Eclipse avremo dei plug-in che ci renderanno le cose più semplici. Quindi visto che noi “non vogliamo reinventare la ruota” lo useremo!
4. Android Developer Tool (ADT) il plugin di cui parlavo sopra. 

Scarichiamo tutto l’occorente per esempio mettiamo tutto in una directory dal nome /markuz/lavoro/androidresources. Unzippate  solamente l’Android SDK

Per prima cosa installiamo la JDK se ancora non ce l’abbiamo. Occhio la JRE non basta quindi assicuratevi che ci sia veramente la JDK.

Successivamente installiamo Eclipse. A seconda del SO che state utilizzando cambierà la procedura. Solo un appunto, se usate Ubuntu non utilizzate l’installazione tramite l’apt-get o il gestore dei pacchetti Synaptic perché la versione sul repository è un po’ datata, si tratta infatti della versione 3.2 che non è più supportata dal team android. Quindi installate la versione appena scaricata.

Una volta installato Eclipse, installiamo il plug-in ADT. Selezionate dal menu Help –> Software Updates –> Find and Install. A questo punto scegliete  Search for new feature to install e successivamente New Remote Site e inserite questo indirizzo: https://dl-ssl.google.com/android/eclipse/ . Cliccate Finish.

Eclipse scaricherà il plug-in. Quando finisce selezionate Android Plugin –> Developer Tools e cliccate Next.

Ora è necessario riavviare Eclipse.

Una volta riavviato selezioniamo Window à Preferences –> Android clicchiamo su Browse e andiamo a prendere il file (unzippato) di Android SDK che avevamo scaricato. Poi Apply –> OK.

Se tutto è andato bene, abbiamo un ambiente di sviluppo completo  per sviluppare la nostra prima applicazione Android, che non srà la solita “Hello, Android” perchè ne abbiamo visto così tante che ci siamo stufati no?

Il mercato dei cellulari non sembra risentire della crisi, almeno per alcuni dei più grandi produttori, basti pensare al successo degli smartphone e in particolare dell’IPhone. Naturalmente in questo settore neanche Google è rimasta a guardare rispondendo subito con questo progetto open-source, la piattaforma Android per sistemi mobili e quindi con il suo GPhone. Il primo GPhone � realizzato dall’HTC ed attualmente � disponibile per gli abbonati di T-Mobile. Negli Stati Uniti e in Inghilterra � disponibile da ottobre, in Europa arriver� il 30 gennaio ma solo in Olanda, Repubblica Ceca, Austria a seguire sar� disponibile anche per gli altri paesi, compresi l’Italia, anche se non ci sono delle date precise. Anche in questo saremo ultimi? Vedremo.

Intanto noi iniziamo a scoprire questo mondo almeno non ci faremo trovare impreparati!

Ma cosa vuol dire che Android � aperto? Vuol dire che possiamo installare quello che vogliamo - che troviamo sul Market di Android o che sappiamo realizzare noi stessi- , possiamo installare applicazioni che accedono alle risorse e alle funzioni del sistema operativo. E’ possibile creare applicazioni o meglio servizi integrati con quelli che gi� la rete ci rende disponibili. Il cellulare non sar� pi� un semplice dispositivo per fare telefonate e inviare sms ma sar� un “erogatore” di servizi web based. Tutto questo ci fa pensare alle applicazioni cosiddette Mush-Up cio� applicazioni che integrano dati, informazioni e funzionalit� provenienti da pi� fonti. Per esempio un’ applicazione che recupera tutti i contatti della nostra rubrica telefonica e li mostra posizionandoli in una cartina di Google Maps secondo il loro indirizzo di domicilio. Cos’altro si pu� fare? Spazio alla fantasia!

Terminata l’introduzione filosofica vedremo come impostare il nostro ambiente di sviluppo per creare applicazioni per android.

How to mix up Facebook, LabVIEW, Arduino, Firmata and a lot of spare time.

This year i spent my winter holiday at home so i got a lot of spare time and what is better than Facebook to waste your time?

I use this for a couple of days and i found it very usefull, it permits me to go away from my pc but be able to understand in a very clear way if something new happened on facebook and from who, no more manual update of facebook pages, less time sit in front of screen and real time advise.Also the lamp is very nice and the smooting fading of its color light is fascinating.

The tech inside it.

Facebook Lamp hardware side is made using an Arduino 10000 and a superflux RGB led covered by an IKEA lastic cup … no more, no exernal power suppy is required, it take what it need from USB.

I installed Arduino with Firmata Standard V2 that gives me all the controll on the single arduino pins from my laptop via USB.

I konw that probably this is not the best in term of efficency because her the arduino is used only ad “pin driver” and all the calculations are made on PC, but that is i decide to use firmata also in thi experiment because i’m realizing a LabVIEW library for Firmata… stay tuned!

There is more; it searches for you if an update come from a certain friend or group of friends and, if so, commands to  arduino to light up the appropriate color of the RGB led.

The code software for host PC in still in pre-alpha version and i’m working on it but if you are interested i can share it for sure!

Durante il tempo libero di questa settimana ho scritto questa piccola applicazione, cosa che avevo in mente di fare già da diverso tempo.

Si tratta di un widget o gadget cioè di un software che gira in una piccola finestra in un angolo del nostro desktop svolgendo un compito semplice e preciso, informarci sugli ultimi messaggi apparsi sui forum di ILVG.it

ILVG.it RSS Widget scarica a intervalli di 1 minuto le informazioni sugli ultimi post inseriti nei forum di ILVG.it e ne visualizza titolo e data in una piccola lista, basterà poi un click sul titolo che ci interessa per leggere tutto il post nel nostro web browser preferito.

Ho deciso di distribuire i sorgenti di ILVG.it RSS Widget con licenza Open Source BSD nella speranza che altri vogliano aiutarmi nello sviluppo.

Ho pensato di condividerlo qui perchè mi sembra un bell’esempio di animazine grafica 100% LabVIEW, di sheduling, di code, di reference e di altre cose “strane”…

L’XControl si presenta come un normale controllo tipo stringa a cui è possibile passare un l’url ad una pagina web. Al click sul controllo la pagina verrà aperta nel browser predefinito.

Tutto funziona solo (purtroppo) su SO Windows.
